Crack Down on “Legal Highs” in Newquay

There’s to be a crack down on legal highs in Newquay as local police have been working closely with Cornwall Trading Standards to stop the sale of "legal highs" in the town.

Both organisations said their campaign had been been started as a result of incidents in Cornwall and deaths elsewhere in the UK.

Newquay shops said they did not realise they were breaking the law, as they had taken the word of the product manufacturers.

So far, shops in Bodmin, Camborne, Liskeard, Penzance, Redruth and Truro as well as Newquay have been inspected.

Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Our aim is to educate the shopkeepers now and this will allow us to prove they understand the nature of their products, so we can follow with strict enforcement in the coming months."

He added that a quantity of illegal drugs were seized from one shop in the county purporting to sell legal highs.
