Landslide at Newquay Beach

There’s been a small landslide at Great Western Beach, Newquay, Cornwall, at the beginning of February 2015 – closing off the road to pedestrians and vehicles. The access road is between the Great Western Hotel and the Original Factory shop, opposite Newquay station.

The landslide came without warning, sliding between the seating area at the top where there are benches looking towards Newquay Harbour, and the lower level of the same road. The road gives access only to Great Western Beach so this doesn’t affect any traffic, just beach access.

The small promontory has always been unstable, with a sign in the caves directly below the road warning people that there might be loose debris falling from the cliffs, but the landslide that occurred was much bigger than you’d have ever guessed could happen without warning.
