Man Arrested After Two Cyclists Die on A30

Cyclists Newquay Cornwall

Earlier this morning two cyclists died in a fatal road accident with a lorry on the A30 between Summercourt and Fraddon. Police have made an arrest: one man arrested in connection with this incident.

The cyclists are believed to be on a Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle trip (LEJOG).

The man has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The A30 remains closed and is likely to remain closed for some hours.

The arrested man, aged 31 from Holsworthy, has been released on police bail while investigations continue. He is a lorry driver.

It is believed the two cyclists who died are not locals, police are contacting their next of kin.

Update: The lorry collided with the two male cyclists who were riding in the nearside lane, also in the eastbound direction. The two cyclists are believed to live in Scotland and have yet to be notified. One of the deceased was 48-years-old and from Scotland.

The road was closed for seven and a half hours.

Update 2: The two LEJOG cyclists have been named as: Andrew McMenigall, 47, from Aberdeen and Toby Wallace, 36, of Philadelphia. Both worked for Aberdeen Asset Management.

The two cyclists were on a charity ride to raise funds for the Kirsten Scott Memorial Trust, which was set up in memory of a colleague who lost her battle with cancer in October 2011.

Update 3: In September 2014, Robert Palmer, 32, of Grimscott near Bude in Cornwall was jailed for over eight years for their deaths – death by dangerous driving. He fell asleep while driving. Robert Palmer was employed by Frys Logistics Ltd in Launceston. In late 2015 the firm’s license was revoked. Neither Frys Logistics, nor Mark Darren Fry, can hold an Operator’s license for 10 years from December 2015. Mr Fry cannot “be involved in the management, administration or control of an entity which holds or obtains such a Licence, anywhere in Great Britain”
