Newquay Flooding August 2013

There have been flash floods in Newquay and surrounding villages in the past 24 hours, including flash floods at Crantock and Perranporth, where the Tywarnhayle pub has flooded worse than the floods last winter.

In Crantock it’s been described as “devastation”.

Most reports say the water rose from manhole covers as the underground drains failed to cope with the deluge. The centre of Crantock village was under about 18″ (47cm) of water with the fire brigade having to pump out the Post Office and pubs.

Fire crews have pumped out homes in Perranporth and Crantock. They are also dealing with incidents in Newquay and Truro.

Some roads are difficult to pass.

Newquay Hospital, which is a minor injuries unit and community hospital, had to close the minor injury department as two of their three treatment rooms were subject to severe damage by the heavy rain.
