Newquay Library hours to be cut on 18 April, 2011

In a bid to save local libraries, Cornwall County Council are cutting opening hours to save money.

Due to reduced Government funding, Cornwall County Council have to make budget savings. In Cornwall’s case this is £170million over the next four years – and one way of doing this is to reduce the times the libraries are opening, but not completely shutting them down as some locals originally feared.

Newquay Library’s opening hours will change from 9am-6pm on Mondays and Tuesdays to 9.30am-5pm. Thursdays will see the opening hours move from 9am-6pm to 9.30pm-6.30pm. Fridays are being changed from 9am-6pm to 9.30am-5pm. On Saturdays the library will go from opening at 9.30am-12.30pm to 10am-1pm. Newquay Library will still be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Joe Williams, Newquay resident said, “This is great news for libraries! Despite the opening hours being shorter, at least we can celebrate that they are not being shut down and closed as they are such a valuable local resource.
