‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report for Newquay Treviglas

Ofsted have given Newquay’s Treviglas Community College the top rating of “Outstanding” for pupil achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management, following the Ofsted inspection of September 2012.

The Ofsted Inspectors said Treviglas College leaders possessed “unswerving commitment to continuous improvement, ensured that students’ achievement was high”, adding “Students progress in the main school is outstanding, whatever their starting point and irrespective of any disability or special needs.”

There had been marked improvements in the progress made in English and maths in recent years with attainment rising to above national figures in 2012. Student behaviour was also singled out for praise with the report stating: “They flourish within a very caring and supportive environment.”

The report states: “Students enjoy, and help to create the warm and friendly atmosphere that characterises the college and this contributes to the exemplary behaviour around the extensive site.”

One student even commented to Inspectors that the college is like ‘one big happy family’.

Treviglas Sixth Form too was praised, with inspectors noting how well the carefully designed curriculum meets students’ needs. In 2012, for the first time, there was a 100% pass rate at A-level.

Since the last inspection, the College has seen some significant changes in leadership with a new head teacher, Karen Ross, appointed in May 2011. The inspectors noted that the determined efforts of the new head and senior staff to get the best possible teaching have “resulted in significant improvement from the teaching that was found to be good at the previous inspection.”

In response to the report Karen Ross said: “I am absolutely delighted. It¹s official validation of what we see here, every day. I am so proud of everyone.”

Mrs Theresa Frost, Chair of Governors, added: “Thank you and congratulations to all our students, staff and parents.”
