Repairs are complete at fire-ravaged school

Rebuilding work is complete at Treviglas College, the Newquay secondary school devastated by a fire 2010.

This Sunday marks ten months to the day since more than 40 firefighters battled the early-morning blaze which threatened to raze Treviglas College to the ground.

The science and maths rooms were the worst affected by the fire, with some of their blocks and classrooms left as blackened shells.

A total of sixteen science labs and maths classrooms were wrecked by fire or ruined by smoke and the cost of repairing the damage was estimated at more than £500,000.

Firefighters believe that the blaze may have started in the school’s Effective Learning Centre (ELC), which helps any and all pupils who are having problems with their learning.

Temporary classrooms were installed to accommodate students while the rebuilding was carried out.

Two teenagers denied intentionally starting the fire at Treviglas College, when they appeared in court in September.

Anthony Jenkins, 18, of Carworgie Court, St Francis Road, St Columb Road, and a 17-year-old who lives in West Cornwall but cannot be named, were remanded in custody by Judge Christopher Elwen.

A trial has been fixed for December 19 and 20 2011.

UPDATE: In 2012 James Dent and Anthony Jenkins were sentenced to five years in a Young Offenders’ Institution for arson on their former school. The damage cost £1.4million. Whilst on bail, Anthony Jenkins was arrested for selling cannabis in Newquay, for which he received a sentence of 2 months, to run consecutively with the arson charge sentence.

James Dent of Ellenglaze Court, Cubert, Newquay, had a personal vendetta against a member of staff who he blamed for his failure to secure a place to stay on at the school in the 6th form.
