A HOST of the country’s top action sports athletes will compete at Newquay in a series of events announced for 2011.
The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay, have already confirmed nine events in their broadest calendar yet, including the return of surf boat racing and the hugely popular Polo on the Beach in September.
The beach will also entertain some of the country’s best surfers, longboarders and surf boat rowers as they pit themselves against the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
For Will Ashworth, Managing Director of The Watergate Hotel & Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay, the events showcase the best of Cornwall.
He said: “Our events have a great record of attracting leading athletes in their specialist fields. In the past year we’ve had world champion kitesurfers, international polo players and Europe’s top longboard surfers.
“Watergate Bay is well known as one of the most consistent surfing beaches in the country which is a big draw for the competitors, and invariably gives spectators a taste of action sports at the highest technical level.”
Kitesurfers will be the first to hit the water on April 9 and 10 in the first course racing event of the British Kite Surfing Association (BKSA) calendar. Up to 30 competitors will take part in each heat, which, similar to windsurfing races, sees kitesurfers navigate a course marked by buoys.
National champions will be decided in the 39th English National Surfing Championships, held over the May Bank Holiday weekend (April 30 to May 2).
The event is one of the biggest draws on the domestic surfing circuit, with plenty at stake: the winners will qualify for the national team travelling to Ireland in autumn to compete in the European Championships.
