Douglas Houzen Pinder 1886-1949 Newquay Artist
One artist that spent many years in Newquay is Douglas Houzen Pinder. Born in 1886 and with his father dying the following year, by 1901 he had moved, with his mother, to Newquay, where she was an Infant Mistress at a Boarding School. and Douglas was articled to a local architect. Continue reading

Francis Frith Photos of Watergate Bay
Francis Frith visited Watergate Bay twice, adding to his vast collection of photos of the Cornish coast. Watergate Bay stretches from Trevelgue Head at Porth, past what we now see as Watergate Bay and beyond the Hotel. As the Hotel is the only really truly accessible part of Watergate Bay it’s often overlooked that once the tide goes out the sand does stretch a whole two miles from Porth, past the Hotel and up to the next Headland. Mill Bay Soap was an advertiser in many old walking guides and guides to Newquay and Cornwall in the late 1880s. As the railways opened up Newquay and the North Cornish coast, many travel writers wrote books for the newly arriving tourists – and, contained within these walking guides were advertisements.
