National Picnic Week, 17-23 June

It’s National Picnic Week from 17 to 23 June 2013 and it’s time to look at whether we’re doing the great British picnic justice. Who hasn’t turned up at the beach, or park, with a picnic lunch, only to have really skimped on effort and innovation? If you’re the type of person who takes some cheese and tomato sandwiches, wrapped in foil, a shop-bought packet of sausage rolls, some crisps and a bottle of orange squash as your picnic lunch then you should be really ashamed as it really takes so little extra effort to make your picnic a memorable experience, rather than simply “something to eat”. Automobilia Motor Museum, St Stephens, Cornwall

I’ve written this post because this is a visitor attraction that disappeared, one of those old-fashioned privately-owned museums that gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure over the years, but ran its time and closed.

Newquay, Summer 1813 – 200th Anniversary

I was reading an interesting old book this week, a journey by boat around the Cornish coast, including a visit to Newquay, summer 1813. The author’s style was different to others I’ve read, he was very downbeat about a lot of places, having already given Crantock a miss describing it as “like other places inhabited by only the poor, is mean and dirty…. little meets the eye but a cheerless desert of sand”.
