Newquay Clubs and Services for the Elderly

Newquay Clubs Services Elderly

I’ve recently had to start looking around at Newquay clubs and services for the elderly. If you’re recently bereaved and relied heavily on your life partner to provide you with everything you needed, where do you start trying to rebuild your life and get everything you need?

These clubs and groups aren’t all just for the elderly, but are suitable for older adults who need to get out and experience more social interaction.

What clubs and groups can you join? If you’re still active and fit the choices are there to be made, but if you’re more frail and less mobile then it can be daunting to try to establish what groups, clubs and activities you can join in with.

For many, social services will simply take over and arrange everything for you, even paying for it in many cases, possibly enabling you to discover options more easily – but if you’re self-funded, or more active, then you’re left to your own devices, cast adrift in a world you know nothing about. This page is intended to help older and elderly residents of Newquay to find out what’s on, where to go and how to get the help needed to soldier on!

Social services will provide you with a list of agencies, from whom you can buy in carer services, shopping services, etc, but if you want to reduce your outgoings on such services and increase, or start from scratch, to build a network of friends and activities you can find that there’s a real paucity of solid information available.

I hope this page helps somebody as it’s taken hours of research, telephone calls and visits to bring the information together – and it’s an ongoing work which I try to update at least once a year.

Newquay Day Centre, Age Concern, Crantock Street

This is a very welcoming organisation, run by Age Concern. Newquay Day Centre is open five days a week (Monday to Friday) from about 9am to about 4pm. Why not start by going just one day/week to see how you get on?

UPDATE: Since I first wrote this, AgeUK at Newquay now operate an active Facebook page, showing the many events they run, now using the name Newquay Care & Social Club: Newquay Care & Social Club.
They now run far more activities and a Knit & Natter group – their Facebook page is kept well updated.

When I wrote this in 2011, Newquay Day Centre had a transport service, which picked you up from your door and dropped you off again, covering quite a few miles outside of Newquay, so why not phone and find out if it comes near to your house! The bus driver is accompanied by a helper, who helps you to/from your door and the bus. You will need to find out if they still run this service.

In 2011, if you were self-funded, the Day Centre cost ~£20/day (2011 prices) and included the cost of transport and a 2-course hot meal, if you were eligible for funding then there it was £5. There were also plenty of cups of tea and cakes. A variety of activities go on, in the two rooms. If you’re being driven, or can drive yourself of course!

Other facilities included assisted bathing, new wet rooms becoming operational from late October 2011 (£3 in 2011); there’s a hairdressing room where you can have your hair cut for under £10. If your toe nails need cutting, there’s a visiting chiropodist every couple of months and on Tuesdays there’s a communion. Art classes are also held.

Newquay Disabled Club, Tolcarne Road

This group of mainly female members meets every Wednesday on the ground floor of a small detached building behind Newquay Adult Education/the Police Station. Access by vehicle is through a gate in the car park in Quarry Park Road, Newquay, or there’s a gateway from the car park at Newquay Station. On the upper floor there’s an arts and crafts group, but on the ground floor is a meeting space where you can enjoy a cup of tea and some home made cake on Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm. Essentially this session is about a dozen ladies enjoying a natter, some knitting, reading the local papers and organising local fundraising. The Lions Club Newquay provide a bus pickup/drop off service to and from the Newquay Disabled Club meetings, at a cost of just £2/day (2011 price).

Don’t be fooled by the name – Newquay Disabled Club aren’t disabled, they’re just elderly and never got round to changing the name of the club.

It’s just £1 for tea/cake (2011 price), or you can be picked up from your door by the Lions minibus service for £3 (2011 price, including the cost of tea/cake).

Newquay Disabled Club arrange 1-2 trips out each year, using the Lions minibus service.

Councillor Mrs L Cherry is the local Newquay Council contact regarding this Club and its activities (last checked September 2017).

Newquay Christian Centre Pop-In Cafe

The Newquay Pop In Parlour is a coffee morning for the elderly folk, meeting on Fridays from 10am until noon  at the Newquay Christian Centre, East Street, TR7 1BH.  If you simply want to turn up at the Centre then you just pay for your coffee/tea and cakes, which are at a low cost of just pennies for a cup of tea/coffee or a slice of cake or scone. On the day I went along there seemed to be about 8-10 people chatting in a nicely decorated room, with carpet (so it’s not a draughty old church hall) and there looked to be 2-3 types of cake and scones available.

The group also organise 1-2 day trips per year.  Contact them on  01637 875114 or visit their website to get an email address

St Columb Minor Church Friendship Circle

This group meet on Fridays for a hot lunch. Transport can be arranged through the Lions Club Minibus service. The Luncheon Club starts at 1pm and lasts for 3 hours.  There is a minibus service picking people up from their homes and arriving at about 12:30pm. Bus and lunch/activities, there are limits to the numbers they can accommodate due to space and transport limitations, but this is rarely an issue, but just check with Fran, the organiser and contact!

There are several trips out each year through this club, which they try to cap at affordable prices.

Overall, this is a warm and welcoming group.

The Friendship Circle describe themselves as: “We share a home cooked lunch and spend the afternoon playing games, scrabble dominoes etc. It is a club which provides friendship for those who wish to come. Contact Fran 01637 874433 for more details” (last checked March 2018)

They meet at the Griffin pub in Newquay, which is between the Victoria Hotel and Aldi, on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:45am. There’s a general meeting, followed by a talk, then members can enjoy a

pub lunch or a drink if they wish. New members can try out the U3A at a cost of £1.50 per meeting. There are about 25 sub-groups, where members enjoy shared interests. There is something going on somewhere almost every day of the week/month, from walking and strolling, through to lunches, bridge, crafts and more.

This is still a “work in progress” as more details need to be gathered, but I hope it’s helped.
