Long Business Description The Lappa Valley Railway was originally the site of a mine and the railway line passed through. The railway line was closed down, but then bought in 1973 and restored into a great tourist attraction.
Originally a train line for industry, the East Wheal Rose branch line carried passengers from 1905 until it was closed in the Beeching cuts of 1963. On the site you'll also find the East Wheal Rose Engine House, where in 1846 over 1,200 men, women and children were employed in the mine.
East Wheal Rose Disaster, 1846
On 9 July 1846 there was a huge silver-lead mine disaster when a huge thunderstorm started at about 1pm and lasted for 1.5 hours flooding the mine in a catastrophic manner, very similar to what happened in Boscastle in 2004.
