Two youths were arrested after a fire at Treviglas School in Newquay today.
Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading through the entire science block after they were alerted to the fire just before midnight on Wednesday.
Over 40 firefighters battled until 3am to get the blaze under control; the blaze severely damaged three rooms in the Maths & Science Block at Treviglas Community College. No-one was injured.
Devon and Cornwall Police have already arrested two 17-year-old youths, on suspicion of burglary and arson.
Head Teacher of Treviglas Community College, Karen Ross, said the School would remain closed for most pupils, although A-level students were able to sit a planned examination.
Treviglas will open on Friday for students in years 10-13, but year 7-11 pupils have been asked not to attend.
Staff managed to rescue students’ coursework as well as the School’s pet animals.
Forensic teams have been on site at Treviglas, bringing with them a sniffer dog, to investigate the fire.
Chris Ruberry, Fire Investigation Group Manager, said the fire had taken hold very quickly but
the fire services had prevented it spreading, although extensive damage had been caused
inside the Science Block. Further updates will be issued once more detail is known.
