Polo on the Beach will be returning to Watergate Bay in May 2013 – and there will be an expanded weekend-long format. Traditionally held on one weekday evening in September, the Polo on the Beach event will be a two-day event on 18-19 May 2013.
Polo on the Beach has attracted top international polo players since its debut in 2007. Every year, thousands of spectators descend on the famous surfing beach to witness a thrilling display of beach polo.
Watergate Bay Hotel’s Will Ashworth said: “With record numbers attending Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach in 2012, we want to keep growing the event and the next step is to move to a weekend.
“Holding the event in May gives us the benefit of more daylight hours than September, so we can pack even more polo and entertainment into the two day format, and put on more entertainment later into the evening.”
Over 4,000 people turned out to watch the sixth edition of Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach in 2012. Spectators were treated to an action-packed exhibition of beach polo from high goal players including current England squad members Jamie Le Hardy and James Harper, as well as a demonstration chukka from Olympic Eventing star Mary King.
The event opens on Saturday 18 May with a horse race with a difference, incorporating the Extreme Academy and kites. A beach barbecue and champagne bar will be open throughout the afternoon, with live entertainment as the sun sets on the bay.
The main attraction will be held on Sunday 19 May where the event will conclude with two polo matches, in which some of England’s top polo players will compete for the coveted Watergate Bay Trophy.
