Burger King gives £3K for mural

Burger King has given £3,000 to recreate a mural in Newquay after another next to its outlet was painted over.

Burger King said the mural on its wall “had to be repainted” after a request from the landlord of the building.

The youth organisation behind the mural, My A’th Kar Newquay, which means “I Love You Newquay” in Cornish, was saddened by the incident in February.

Burger King said it “strongly supported” My A’th Kar Newquay.

My A’th Kar Newquay is discussing sites for the new mural with Newquay Town Council. Continue reading

Newquay Fistral Beach Cleanup

On the last Saturday of every month, there’s a beach cleanup at Fistral Beach.

If you want to be involved, then be at Bodhi’s Café, on South Fistral at 10am, ready for a 10:15am start. The beach cleanup lasts an hour and you’re provided with all the equipment you need (picking-up sticks, plastic bags, gloves).

Newquay Library hours to be cut on 18 April, 2011

Newquay Library’s opening hours will change from 9am-6pm on Mondays and Tuesdays to 9.30am-5pm. Thursdays will see the opening hours move from 9am-6pm to 9.30pm-6.30pm. Fridays are being changed from 9am-6pm to 9.30am-5pm. On Saturdays the library will go from opening at 9.30am-12.30pm to 10am-1pm. Newquay Library will still be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. Anger as mural is painted over

A mural to promote responsible behaviour among young people in Newquay has been painted over.

Burger King said the mural on its wall “had to be repainted” after a request from the landlord of the building.

The organisation behind the mural, My A’th Kar Newquay, which means “I Love You Newquay” in Cornish, said young people behind the mural were “reeling” from the incident.

The owners of the Burger King building were unavailable for comment.

The mural was painted on the wall of the Burger King restaurant in Cliff Road, Newquay, in November by members of My A’th Kar Newquay, a voluntary project. Continue reading

Newquay Safe Scheme Given Awards

A scheme set up to improve Newquay’s image and keep visitors safe has won two national awards.

Newquay Safe partnership, led by Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police, has been recognised by the Chartered Institute for Public Relations (CIPR).

The partnership’s work in addressing alcohol-related safety concerns over 16 and 17 year olds visiting the town has been awarded the Local Public Services Communications Award for ‘partnership excellence’ and the West of England PRide Award for community relation

Newquay cottages to become preservation project

Some of Newquay’s oldest buildings will be preserved thanks to a £170,000 grant.

The Heritage Lottery Fund money has finally been granted following five years of applications from the Friends of Trenance Cottages.

They want to turn the 17th century Trenance Cottages into an archive, tea room and training centre.

The cottages, which were lived in until the mid 1960s, have most recently been open as a museum although they have fallen into decline.

Newquay Cinema Opening 2011

Newquay Cinema will have four screens, two on each of two floors – and will have seating for 600 people. Once full planning permission was granted, it was estimated it’d be a year before Newquay Cinema was complete.

Construction finally started on 17 May 2010, with ISG Pearce Construction of Exeter as the main contractor. Continue reading
