St Columb Major arson in the gorse

Arsonists have set fire to a large area of gorse at St Columb Major according to the fire service.

Crews battled to put out a 200 metre front of fire at Tregonetha Downs after it broke out just after midnight.

It is the second gorse fire in the county within 48 hours which is being treated as suspicious. Continue reading

Newquay residents warned to be on the alert for new phone scam.

olice are warning residents across Devon and Cornwall about a telephone scam where people are persuaded to pay money over the phone to avoid having their line cut off.

Reports have been made to police in South Molton of an individual ringing the customer claiming to be from BT, advising them that their line will be disconnected because of an unpaid bill.

A payment of £31 is demanded to rectify the situation, otherwise it will cost £118 to re-connect the line at a later date.

If the customer tells them that that they are with a different phone provider, they tell you that they have to pay BT a percentage for line rental. Continue reading

Newquay Crime Maps, Check Out Crime In Your Street

The Police have launched a new crime map website today, building on their more general police crime maps that have been available for some months now.

The instant success of the police crime maps managed to grind to a halt and crash by 10am on its first morning, under the sheer volume of numbers of people who wanted to look up the crime in their street. The Police estimate that between 75,000 and 300,000 people each minute were trying to log in and search their area.

The crime map website is the most detailed crime information ever made publicly available, allowing people to type in their postcode and see the amount of crimes in their town and also how many of those crimes are local to them; it even shows what types of crime are happening in every area. Youths Arrested After Treviglas School Fire

Two 17 year old male youths have been arrested following a burglary and fire at Treviglas Community College in St Columb Minor, Newquay.

Flames tore through the science block at Treviglas, causing “extensive damage” after it was targeted in the early hours of Thursday, January 27 2011.

Police Officers were called after an alarm was sounded at 12:40am and youths were seen running away from Treviglas Community College.

Newquay Treviglas Message to all Students

Thank you to all who have contacted Treviglas and offered support. It is much appreciated. Such an event as happened last night is a shock to everyone, but we are doing everything we can to get back to normal as soon as possible. I would like to thank the emergency services and the Treviglas site staff for their prompt actions last night.

The College will be open for all Post 16 students (Year 12 and 13) and Key Stage 4 students (Year 10 and 11) as normal today (Friday 28th January).

The SOS Charity Day for the RNLI has been postponed. All Key Stage 4 students should, therefore, attend in college uniform.

Newquay Treviglas School Fire: Two Youths Arrested

Two youths were arrested after a fire at Treviglas School in Newquay today.

Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading through the entire science block after they were alerted to the fire just before midnight on Wednesday.

Over 40 firefighters battled until 3am to get the blaze under control; the blaze severely damaged three rooms in the Maths & Science Block at Treviglas Community College. No-one was injured.

Devon and Cornwall Police have already arrested two 17-year-old youths, on suspicion of burglary and arson. Continue reading

Newquay’s Police Chief, Dave Folland, has been forced to retire, as the Government’s cut backs start cutting services. A new regulation, A19, came into place just last week, which means those with 30 years’ service can be made to retire – and it was this regulation that ended Dave Folland’s career with the police in Newquay

Newquay Police Search for Suspect who has Skipped Bail

Police in Newquay are looking for a 23 year-old Newquay male, Simon Bailey, who is suspected of being involved in a fracas in Newquay in May 2010. He was previously arrested, but had failed to answer bail at Newquay Police Station. An arrest warrant was granted by East Cornwall Magistrates’ Court and Simon Bailey is now a wanted person.
