April brings the start of the season as businesses open for the first time this year and everybody’s focussed on giving great experiences to locals and visitors.
The official start date of the tourist season is Easter, which is in mid April 2017 – so the weather has a chance of being quite warm. Local businesses will be dusting off their wares, rolling up their sleeves – and starting to gauge what the public will want from them this year, so they can then look at finalising their planned events for the year ahead in more detail.
Taking a look at what’s ahead, here are some local events occurring in Newquay in April 2017 of interest to residents of Newquay and visitors alike:
1, April 2017
Natty Surf Jam 2017, Newquay
A Festival of Music and Surfing to raise awareness and support for young adults struggling with mental health related illnesses. In memory of local surfer Nathaniel Loney, who tragically lost his life at the age of 25.
There will be a Longboard Competition at Fistral Beach, Newquay and other surfing events throughout the day. Lots of prizes. There’s an after party at Whiskers, Newquay, from 5pm onwards, tickets from £8.

Weekly Table Top Sale, St Columb Minor, St Columb Minor
On Sunday mornings there is an indoor table top sale at St Columb Minor Memorial Hall.
Stalls, local produce/food to buy – and refreshments.

Goonhavern Indoor Car Boot Sale Wednesdays, Goonhavern
Goonhavern hosts two indoor car boot sales on two Wednesdays each month – and one on the last Saturday of each month, just 2-3 miles from Newquay.
Table top sales are on the first Wednesday and the third Wednesday each month and include a variety of bric a brac, new and used goods as well as crafts stalls and handmade goods.
There’s also an outdoor car boot area weather permitting.
Free Parking. All proceeds go towards funding the Village Hall.
This table top sale is in Goonhavern Village Hall and well signposted from the main road. There’s also a cafe area where you can sit and have coffee/tea and a slice of cake.

Porth Beach Clean April 2017, Newquay
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), in partnership with Ecover, have organised a Beach Clean up at Porth Beach on Saturday 8 April 2017.
There’s another beach clean on the same date at 11am at Great Western Beach.

Indoor Car Boot Sale, Sundays,
On every second Sunday of the month an indoor car boot sale is held at the Cornish Birds of Prey Centre between Newquay and Wadebridge.
This is an indoor event – with plenty of free on site parking.
Dogs are not allowed inside the car boot area, but there is a free small dog walking area outside you can use to exercise your dogs and make them comfortable.

Viola Recital, Crantock Church, Newquay
This is a fundraising event for the Wave Project – a three hour viola recital at Crantock Church – free entry, donations requested to go towards the Wave Project.
Adam Pearson on the Viola and Margaret De Valois on Piano, playing Joplin’s The Entertainer, Rachmaninov’s Vocalise, Massenet’s Meditation, and more.
Free admission, with donations accepted for the Wave Project.
Adam and Margaret have a wealth of experience on different instruments in different locations and are delighted to be collaborating on their first classical recital in Cornwall.

Fistral Beach Clean (Monthly) 2017, Newquay
Every month, every year, an enthusiastic group of volunteers meet up for two hours and give Fistral Beach a good clean up, removing anything that’s considered rubbish from the beaches on the last Saturday of the month.
Working with Cornwall County Council and other interested organisations the Fistral beach clean up has been running successfully for several years and there’s always an enthusiastic turn out.
Goonhavern Car Boot Sales Saturdays, Goonhavern
Goonhavern holds a car boot sale and indoor table top sale on the last Saturday of the month, February through to the end of November.
There are also two table top sales on the first Wednesday and the third Wednesday each month with a variety of bric a brac, new and used goods as well as crafts stalls and handmade goods.

Newquay Marine Trail, Towan Blystra, Newquay
Learn about the coastal history of Newquay on a guided Marine Walk and Talk, lead by an expert historian from the Newquay Old Cornwall Society and local community museum.
Take in the landmarks of the Newquay coastline including the Fish Cellars, Huers Hut, Newquay harbour and the old Lifeboat house and slipway – all brought to life with the aid of early photographs to illustrate the various aspects of life in the olden days in Newquay.
The walk is expected to last two hours and is part of the Newquay Art8 Arts & Culture Festival events over May Bank Holiday Weekend.
When & Where: Saturday 29 April 2017, 10.30am. Meet at Newquay Heritage Archive and Museum.
Suggested donation: £3 adults, £1.50 children.
Tickets from Newquay Heritage Museum and Archive in advance or on the day.
