The Hurling at St Columb Major is always on Shrove Tuesday, then the Saturday following the next Saturday (so 11 days later). The date of Shrove Tuesday varies every year.
Hurling Start Time: 4.30pm in the Market Square.

The game of Hurling is a traditional Cornish sport where teams compete to gain control of the specially made silver ball and get it to the end point. It’s very rough and tumble!
The game starts with the ball being tossed up in the Market Square at 4.30pm. The first hour or so is very playful, with the crowd getting opportunities to touch the ball. Then things take a turn as the teams are then hell bent on getting the ball into THEIR goal, with the goals being about two miles (3km) apart, this is no mean feat.
The winner, who manages to get the ball into their goal, is then carried back to the Market Square, with the winning team’s anthem song being sung.
At 8pm they all meet at the Market Square again – and it’s off for a pub crawl, with the ball being dunked into one gallon jars of ale at each pub on the route, before the beer is consumed by those present.
It is a free event, free to watch the hurling in the streets of St Columb Major.
