This year the date for Halloween is Tuesday 31 October, so most Halloween events in Newquay will be on the weekend before.
Newquay Main Event:
The BIG Halloween event of Newquay town, aimed at residents, families, locals and visitors, is the annual free Zombie Crawl event, organised by Newquay BID. Events start at 1pm outside the Newquay Lighthouse Cinema, with Titan the Robot – and more. At 3pm The Zombie Crawl starts, this is a short procession through town, with participants and crowd watchers dressed in Halloween fancy dress and Zombie outfits. The procession ends at the Victoria Hotel, with a big party with lots to see and do! If you’re coming from out of town and trying to get your bearings, the Cinema is at the end of the pedestrian area, next to Newquay Bus Station – and the Victoria Hotel is close to Newquay Railway Station, close to Aldi.
The Origins of Halloween:
The word Halloween has evolved over hundreds of years from a variety of sources and olden day names. All Saints Day, on 1 November, The Eve of All Hallows (All Hallows Eve) or Hallow Even.
Originally the Celtic New Years Eve, the eve of Samhain or “Winter’s Eve”. People believed that the dead, or the disembodied spirits of those who had died throughout the preceding year, would return to Earth in search of living bodies that they could possess for the next year, their only hope chance of afterlife.
People who were still living, though, didn’t want to be possessed by the lost souls of the dead – so on 31 October they would extinguish the fires in their homes, making them cold and inhospitable. They would then dress up in ghoulish costumes and parade around the local neighborhood, making as much noise as they could in order to frighten away the spirits who were looking for a living body to possess!
Get in on the action by grabbing yourself a Halloween costume online, or trawl the local shops to see what you can find.
