Cornwall’s public sector organisations are to come together in a gala event which aims to break down barriers with people who have learning disabilities.
The annual emergency services Blue Light Day will be held at the County Showground, Wadebridge, on 3 July between 10am and 3pm.
This is the sixth Blue Light Day and, since its small beginnings as an event to help break down barriers between people with learning disabilities and the emergency services, this year it has grown to feature around 70 different stalls from many public, charitable and private sector exhibitors.
Last year more than 500 people were in attendance and many more are expected this time around. Free buses are laid on from around the county to get people to and back from the venue
In recent years the event’s appeal has spread to become a focus not just for those with learning disabilities but also other vulnerable adults. It bridges all strands of disability, age, race, gender, sexual orientation and religion.
The event this year is funded police, fire and council who work closely with Cornwall People First.
Colin Gameson, from the police diversity team, who has organised the last three Blue Light Days, said: “The event is becoming a major event in the public sector calendar because it gives all organisations a chance to engage with so many people on an informal, one to one basis.
“It also allows those of us in the emergency services to view the work of our colleagues in the charitable sector and find new ways that we can work together to the benefit of all communities.”
Henry Scrase, information coordinator at Cornwall People First, said: “We are incredibly proud to be a co-host of Blue Light Day.
“Without doubt the favourite day of the learning disability calendar, Blue Light Day is important for so many reasons. Primarily, it gives people with learning disabilities the opportunity to meet Cornwall’s emergency services, including police, fire, and Ambulance. This helps build up trust and understanding between the services and people with learning disabilities.
“Additionally it gives people with learning disabilities the chance to say what they think about the emergency services provided, whether they are doing a good job and help to identify ways that the services can be improved.
“The annual event is a fun and inclusive way that people can work together to ensure that these essential services deliver their services to Cornwall’s communities in line with the country’s equality and diversity requirements.”
