The St Francis Home for Animals in Newquay, on Trevelgue Road, Porth provides a dog rescue service, alongside their dog training and puppy socialization classes and dog boarding kennels.
Set in 7 acres, and fully staffed by professionals, this long-established animal charity is a dog’s best friend, even when he’s lost his best friend.
St Francis Home for Animals was founded by a group of animal enthusiasts in 1955, when there were very few rescue and rehoming facilities. The original founders wanted to stop unwanted pet dogs and strays being put to sleep when they could be happily rehomed. With this in mind St Francis was founded on its existing site, and became a Charitable Trust in 1961.
The St Francis Home for Animals, who since 1999 have taken in only dogs, rehome around 300 dogs every year.
With 27 kennels, and space for approximately 30 dogs there is an isolation kennel for new or poorly arrivals, and a block for strays they take in that have been found by the public, or brought in by the police or council workers.
In 2011 a new training hall was opened, providing indoor training facilities, and is the ideal space for some of the dogs who need a quieter environment at the start of their training.
With nearly 7 acres of grounds there is plenty of room to let the dogs run and let off steam!
St Francis has a small number of kennels for boarding dogs, charges for this are £13/night, depending on the size of your dog and a £2/night discount if you’ve more than one dog that needs boarding kennels. Doggy day care is available at £10/day. (2017/2018 Prices).
Training classes and dog socialization classes are also available, run by Vicky Raby qualified by the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers and Gary Roberts. See website for details of what’s on offer.
The St Francis Home for Animals holds a few fundraising events each year, including Open Days.
